Rooiheuwel is a self catering Karoo Guest Farm in South Africa, situated in the beautiful surroundings of the escarpment of the Nuweveld Mountains in the Great Karoo with a typical mountain-karoo landscape, 80km west of Beaufort West and 60km north of Leeu-Gamka.

Rooiheuwel is a safe and ideal getaway destination throughout the year. It offers you the opportunity to visit and experience real karoo farm life. This is the place to lose track of the days, unwind, catch up with your children, loved one, renew ties with friends and come to terms with yourself. Here young children can still play around until the late hours without worry about their safety.


Grootdroom is a beautifully constructed, self-contained mountain chalet, built on the banks of a dry riverbed surrounded by the Nuweveld Mountains. This holiday home was made for comfortable living for 16 guests, with well-equipped features such as a complete 12 volt photovoltaic (PV) solar system that uses the sun as a renewable energy source to satisfy its own electricity needs e.g. lights and fridge.

Additional fixtures include 4x fully furnished bedrooms (5-sleeper room: 1x double bed, 1x single bed and 1x bunk single bed, 4-sleeper room: 1x double bed, 2x single beds, 4-sleeper room: 1x 3-quarter bed and 2x single beds and 3-sleeper room: bedroom under the deck with 3x single beds). Wooden deck overlooking the mountains. Inside braai area. Fully furnished open plan kitchen / sitting room. Gas stove, 213l solar fridge / freezer, fully equipped wheelchair friendly bathroom. Separate shower, separate toilet, 2x outdoor cold water showers, outdoor flush toilet with a beautiful view. Outside lapa with bonfire, braai facilities. Attractive stone dam for cooling down in the hot African sun.

Comfortable, well equipped, self-contained farmhouse, complete with lapas and outside and inside braais. There is also a rock pool where you can cool off after the days outdoor activities. Boplaas can accommodate 15 guests. It has 2 bedrooms; 1 room with 1 double and 1 single bed, 1 room with 2 double bunk single beds (sleeps 4), 1 bathroom and separate shower. The farmhouse has a dining room and lounge as well as a kitchen with an electric-stove, fridge and a freezer. You can also pitch a tent at the camping site at Boplaas.

The COTTAGE at Boplaas:
Original cottage, well equipped with microwave, fridge, and gas-plate stove. The cottage has a double bed and an en-suite bathroom. There is an open plan kitchen and outside braai facilities.

FARMSHED at Boplaas:
Farm shed for overnight (mattresses or beds) with an indoor fireplace. Braai facilities. Single beds only. It accommodates 8 people.

NB - for larger groups only (provide own bedding and towels)

SHEPHERDS Kliphuisie in the veld:
This is a place for those who want to shower outside, bath in a zinc bath, wash your clothes outside and enjoy this primitive lifestyle. The original shepherds kliphuis has 1 bedroom with 2 single beds, as well as a sleeper couch in the lounge. There is an outside shower (warm water) and toilet, an outside bake oven and "skerm" with braai facilities. Kitchen with basics. Kliphuisie does not have electricity but there is a solar fridge, lighting with solar lamps and a small stone dam for cooling off on hot summer days. Kliphuisie is only within reach by bakkie or a high vehicle otherwise arrangements can be made.

BOPLAAS Camping Site:
Campsite under thorn trees with ablution facilities (electrified ), donkey-geyser, flush toilets, showers, washbasins and a camping kitchen with 3 sinks, power points and water.
Rates: R170 per camping space per night and Adult (15y +) R40 p.p.n Children (7 - 14y) R30 p.p.n Children (U/7) Free


- Catering for larger groups (e.g. spitbraai, potjiekos and boerekos - booking essential)
- We can supply provisions for cyclists, motor-bikers and visitors who have limited ability to carry food and drink

Advnture and Activities:

- Karoo Erdvark 4x4 routes: Three separate mountainous 4x4 routes, with an average grading of between 2 and 4, plus two riverbed 4x4 routes, ensure maximum enjoyment for any 4x4 enthusiasts. A diff lock is an advantage but not a prerequisite. A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. Experience is necessary and low ratio gears are essential. Cost: R200 for the first vehicle and first route. R50 per additional vehicle and route.

- Hiking: Explore the wonder of the Karoo landscape on foot. A network of trails exist from one day circular hikes up to a 7 day hiking trail, all with the option of having your luggage carried (slack packing). Overnight in a farmhouse, mountain chalet, shed or pitch a tent under the starts. Trails are not guided.

- Dual-sport motor-biking (off-road): The back roads and the main roads in the Koup and Upper Karoo can be traveled using Rooiheuwel as the base. After a day in the saddle bikers can enjoy a meal and liquid refreshments around the campfire.

- Mountain Bikes: Numerous mountain bike routes are available, varying from easy to more demanding, so you will find routes to challenge you at your fitness level. For the more adventurous rider, there are some very technical 4x4 routes on offer. All routes vary in terrain and degree of difficulty. Routes are ideally suited to make Rooiheuwel the perfect place to host training camps for endurance rides or stage races. Trail maps available.

- Birding: Birdwatchers' paradise! The farm includes mountainous areas and plains offering you the best of both birding habitats. On the plains you may see the following birds: Karoo Korhaan, Ludwig's Bustard, Double-banded Courser and Namaqua Sandgrouse, and of course the LBJs and larks such as the Chat Flycatcher, Karoo Long-billed Lark.

Other attractions include:
- Visit Karoo National Park - two of the Big Five animals, namely black rhino and lion.
- Chris Barnard Museum and the Old Village Museum at Spinwiel Antique Shop. Both can be found on Donkin Street, Beaufort West.
- Beautiful old restored houses on Bird Street, Beaufort West.
- MC Ellis fietswinkel (bicycle shop).The bicycle shop is the oldest family business still operational in Beaufort West. It is also a museum, and well worth a visit.
