High 5 Adventure Trail - Five Days of High Altitude, High Energy Fun, a MUST for all ADRENALINE JUNKIES!

"We will show you waterfalls, mountain peaks, river gorges & caves - some spots so secret that even the locals don't know about them!". The Wild Mountain Adventures is based at the Rosstrevor Guest Farm, near Barkley East, in the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Mountain range. Our 3, 5 and 7 day trails are designed to provide variety, exhilaration and adventure. We travel between guest farms by foot, pedal, hoof and paddle taking in spectacular scenery along the way. Highlights include horse-riding to a magnificent waterfall, camping in a riverside cave, kayaking the Kraai river and cycling through awe-inspiring mountains.

Welcome & Briefing: Arrive Rosstrevor Guest Farm for welcome drinks and introduction. If you would like to then we can take you to a wonderful sundowner spot - or you can just relax after your long drive as you wish. Dinner will be served in our restaurant and accommodation will be provided in our charming Victorian farmhouse.

Day 1 - OFF-ROAD MOUNTAIN BIKE & RIVER SWIM: After a farmhouse breakfast gather up your bikes for a full day's mountain biking to Avoca Cottage. The morning's riding will consist of an off-road trail with some challenging technical sections including sheep paths, river crossings and rocky descents. Along the way you will see stunning mountain views, deep gorges and bushman paintings. After a swim in the river and picnic lunch we will direct you back up the gravel roads for a gentle self-guided ride to Avoca Cottage which will be your home for the night. We will provide dinner before leaving you to relax for the evening.
Day 2 - HIKE TO SNOWDON FALLS: Breakfast will be served at Avoca Cottage and we will then guide you up Snowdon peak to a stunning waterfall where a picnic lunch will be served. If the climb doesn't take your breath away then the views will! After dinner, enjoy a well-deserved rest and sleep over at Avoca Cottage.


Day 3 - HORSE RIDING AT ROSSTREVOR: After breakfast we will transport you back to Rosstrevor Guest Farm where we will introduce you to our stunning well-schooled horses and beginners will be given basic instruction. Our ride through Rosstrevor will include riding through river gorges, into caves and stunning views. There will be a chance to swim in the river whilst we stop for a picnic lunch to rest the horses. More experienced riders will be given the chance to enjoy fast canters through the farmlands, but our experienced guides will ensure that the pace will be adjusted to suit all levels of rider.
Day 4 - MOUNTAIN BIKING, RIVER RAFTING & OVERNIGHT CAMP: After breakfast we will pack bikes, boats and camping equipment for the highlight of our trail. We will climb to 3,001 meters to Tiffindell Ski Resort where experienced and brave mountain-bike riders can have the opportunity to ride down the extreme pass to Rhodes. If a gentle cycle is more your style then we will adjust the trail accordingly. Will continue on through scenic Rhodes Village to our river rafting launch point where a picnic lunch will be served. The afternoon will be spent paddling down the beautiful Kraai river, enjoying the wonderful birdlife and occasional rapid to ensure that everyone stays awake! By late afternoon we will arrive at a stunning cave - our home for the night. Enjoy a hearty bush braai and enjoy the unique experience of sleeping like a bushman for the night.


Day 5 - RIVER RAFTING & HIKE TO BUSHMAN PAINTINGS: After a bush breakfast we will continue down the Kraai river on our inflatable canoes. At the halfway point we will stop and hike up to a huge cave to view over 87 bushman paintings in pristine condition. After a well-earned rest we will continue down the river where negotiating some exciting rapids will provide the trips final challenge. A picnic lunch and a few drinks on the beach provides a fitting end to your Wild Mountain Adventure. Then returning back to Rosstrevor Guest Farm dinner will be served in our restaurant. You can enjoy a well-earned night's sleep in our lovely Victorian farmhouse. The next morning we provide breakfast before your onward travels.

Tsakane (Happy Place) is based in the privately owned Balule Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger National Park and home to Africa's "Big Five" (Lion, Buffalo, Rhino, Elephant and Leopard.)

Tsakane Wilderness Trail Camp

Accommodation: Comprises four dome safari tents accommodating 8 persons and a Trail Ranger fanned out in a semi circle around a camp fire. Each tent is furnished with two camp stretchers and comfortable mattresses with a fitted sheet and pillows, a canvass wardrobe, side table with lamp while two canvass camp chairs and a canvass wash basin are located at the entrance of each tent. Guests are required to bring their own sleeping bags and towels. The camp specialises in providing a unique wilderness experience. Our two Trail Rangers, with some 40 years combined experience, will not only share there knowledge with you, but encourage you to fully participate during the trail.

Amenities: A Large safari tent canopy is used as a dining and relaxation area and overlooks a dry riverbed often frequented by elephant, the toilet enclosure is serviced by a chemical toilet and a outdoor bucket type open-air shower. Guests are required to prepare the bucket by filling water from a donkey boiler.

Catering: All meals are uniquely prepared on an open fire. Early morning coffee, tea and rusks are served followed by brunch, a light lunch and dinner.

Activities include guided day trails, sleep-outs under the African stars, game drives and specialist photographic and birding excursions.

Typical day in the wilderness trail camp: Guests are woken to the aroma of coffee boiling before embarking on a walking trail lasting some four hours. On returning to the Trail Camp brunch is served before guests are transported to the Tsakane Safari Camp where they have the opportunity to take a swim or jacuzzi or socialise around the bar. A light lunch is often served in the bush on the banks of a river. A short walk or game drive is conducted in the late afternoon before guests enjoy a hot or cold shower ahead of dinner around the camp fire until retiring to bed.

Trail Rangers: The trails are led by Mark Robinson or Terry Schulze, each with some twenty years guiding experience in "Big Five" reserves such as Kruger National Park, Sabie Sands, Klaserie and Mashatu in Botswana. Guests shall be required to sign an indemnity agreement on arrival at the camp.
